CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

THE WAITING ROOM DOOR OPENED, and Dr. Monroe, still dressed in his scrubs, walked in and found Jim. The doctor’s face held a vacant expression and the color had gone out of his cheeks.

Jim looked at his watch again. “What’s wrong?” It was too soon for the surgery to be over.

Monroe sat in the chair next to Jim, laced his fingers. “Jim, Nena’s okay; she’s in recovery. We couldn’t get the tumor out. When we got in there, we found it had completely penetrated the colon wall and had its tentacles wrapped around portions of the small intestine, bladder, and left kidney. The local metastasis is significant and inoperable. Even if we did a full dissection, I wouldn’t be able to remove it all. It’s too risky. There may be some surgeons out there who’d be willing to take on something like this, and you’re free to seek them out. My office can give you some names if you want to go that route.”

The waiting room felt like it had shrunk, like the walls had closed in on all sides. Jim tried to draw in a breath, but his lungs weren’t working properly, the air was too thick, too heavy. Dr. Monroe’s words hammered in Jim’s head . . . tentacles . . . metastasis . . . significant . . . inoperable . . . too risky. The room darkened, and the other people there became shadows, menacing, looming, elongated figures, distorted. His Nena was going to die.
